Sub Swara Debut Triggers Mix At International Tapes and Unveil New Track

Mix: "Triggers Vol. 1 Mix" via International Tapes
MP3: "Steam" via XLR8R

"They travel the world sampling drum sounds both traditional and futuristic to freak their funk. But in the case of "Bend You," off their forthcoming album Triggers, it sounds like this time their beat vacation took them on an intergalactic spaceship ride, with giant rhythms and chirps that sound warped in from the outer reaches of the universe but retain a distinctly warm, human quality." The FADER

"Sub Swara manages to transfer the eclectic sounds of their New York club night to tape, bleeding and blending dubstep, ragga, dub, global elements and straight up dance music in a flawless manner that's always fresh, never stale." XLR8R

Global bass duo, Sub Swara, unleash their first in a series of mixtapes on the International Tapes site today. Sub Swara member Dave Sharma explains the inspiration for the mix, "When we set out to create a series of mixtapes around Triggers, we wanted to do more than the standard re-arrangement of the album tracklist, with features by some of our favorite artists. The Sub Swara live sets have grown from a shared-DJ-set program into an amalgam of a lot of things: our own original material is the foundation, to which we add live percussion, sampled elements, field sounds, horn sections... all presented as a 90-minute spontaneous, dancefloor journey though a myriad of tempos and genres, tied together by intense basslines and relentless percussive energy. We wanted to showcase these things-but with more of a mixtape vibe than a live show" The mix begins with Sub Swara's latest single "Steam" with XLR8R calls "a thundering piece of percussive energy that brings to mind UK funky's drum love and kuduro's relentlessness, all before the track does an unexpected, albeit brief about-face into dubstep's familiar shuffle." The mix also contains many other highlights from the group's upcoming Triggers album and new unheard tracks from Starkey, Kraddy, Moldy, and Julio Bashmore.

Brooklyn-based Sub Swara writes, produces and performs genre-bending bass music that parallels the diversity of their hometown. Consisting of Dhruva and Dave Sharma, Sub Swara's musical genome brings together a wide assortment of DNA - dub to hip-hop, dancehall to punk rock, and all the global sounds in between. With sets crafted for both dancefloor intensity and cerebral curiosity, Sub Swara combines electronic production, live instrumentation, and 3000% of recommended energy levels to create an ecstatic, human experience.

Originally started a club night, Sub Swara has always focused on melding bass music of all creeds and cultures. Over 3 years, the night became one of the most popular and respected club nights in NYC, hosting artists such as Mary Ann Hobbs, The Glitch Mob, Bassnectar, The Bug, and Poirier. Sub Swara released their 2008 debut album, Coup d'Yah, to widespread acclaim; critics and tastemakers from Pitchfork, to XLR8R, BBC Radio 1 and the FADER all lauded its seamless melding of varied rhythms, intricate global instrumentation and production both deep and dancefloor-centric. Sub Swara's remix of Balkan Beatbox's "Balkumbia" was featured in the Fader/Nike mixtape series for the 2010 World Cup, Pitch Perfect.

Sub Swara's second album, Triggers (Low Motion Records), continues the group's exploration of different spaces in bass music, and draws from a completely unique sound pallete that marries both live (much of the percussion is actually played by Sub Swara, in addition to other instruments by guest artists) and electronic elements. It traverses through dubstep, hip hop, and sounds yet to be classified, binding these elements together with strong melodies, intoxicating rhythms, relentless energy and inventive production. Triggers was written as Sub Swara's performances become increasingly live, incorporating live drumming, re-composition and improvised sequences-all while maintaining dancefloor intensity and bass weight.

With vocalists such as Dead Prez, Lyrics Born, Kendra Foster of Parliament Funkadelic and the up and coming hip hop act, Freddie Mills featured on Triggers, the collaborations are largely hip hop and soul-based, while the vocals in Coup d'Yah were largely dancehall. The instrumental collaborations feature the afrobeat horns of Antibalas, beatboxer Shamik, and a host of master session musicians from around the world. Sub Swara will be touring extensively in the fall of 2010 to support the new album.
