Richard Buckner just announced a summer co-headline tour with David Kilgour. Richard Buckner will be touring in support of Our Blood, which will be released August 2 on Merge Records.
Since 2006’s Meadow, fans of Richard Buckner have been clamoring for new material and wondering what was keeping their hero from releasing the new songs he would perform on the road. Well, it’s a long story! First, there was the score to a film that never happened. Then there was a brief brush with the law over a headless corpse in a burned-out car that had all eyes in Buckner’s small hometown in upstate New York turned toward him and his long-suffering truck. Richard reports, “After chatting with me for a few hours and giving me and my truck (implicated, as well) a good eyeballing, they took the ruling minority’s side and let me go.”
Shortly after a move to a safer, less-popular corpse dumping ground, the death of his tape machine led to yet another reboot. After Richard called in Buddy Cage on pedal steel and Steve Shelley on percussion and put new mixes on his laptop, his new “safer” place was burglarized. Goodbye, laptop. “I called Merge and requested that they send their Exorcism Squad to my residence to cleanse the area and allow me to continue with my work. This was the one department, though, that they hadn’t fully developed (a pre-Grammy business model). Listeners were becoming anxious and even angry sometimes at Merge and the universe as a whole for the creative delay, never contemplating that on some level, the real perp was their file-sharing friend.”
Well now we can all breathe a sigh of relief when Our Blood is finally released. Mixed at the home of Malcolm Burns and with Buckner’s own artwork laid out by Jill Draper, it promises to be well worth the wait.
