"That moment when dreams become troublesome labyrinths and you just can't wake up until it's through. Something has happened, but it was all just a dream and doesn't feel that petty..."
Hailing from Santa Monica, California, Daedelus (born Alfred Weisberg-Roberts) became interested in making noise at a tender young age. He studied Jazz at USC, and then jumped headfirst into the often heartbreaking music business. It wasn't long before music critics around the world lauded Daedelus as a musical genius. The combination of his personal interests (Victorian Dandyism, invention, Wales, martial arts, chance and coincidence) with his musical influences (film scores, old school Rave, techno and muddy pop) have created a signature style that could be described as freewheeling, experimental, plunderphonic, whimsical, symphonic, off-kilter electronic dance music.
Under the Daedelus moniker, Alfred has released five full-length albums in as many years: Invention (2002), Rethinking The Weather (2003), Of Snowdonia (2004), Exquisite Corpse (2005) and Denies The Days Demise (2006). In addition, there have been a gaggle of other LPs, EPs, remixes and side projects along the way. Most notably The Weather, a collaboration between himself, Busdriver and Radioinactive. Their self-titled album
became the inspiration for Rethinking The Weather only months later. Another Daedelus project is a group called Adventure Time (formed with long-time friend and Dublab founder Frosty). The LP Dreams of Water Themes and EP Glass Bottom Boats have spawned from this creative duo.
Most recently, Daedelus teamed up with Alpha Pup Records to release his newest musical gem, an EP-length project entitled Throw A Fit. "The vision Alpha Pup displayed was what led me to think what the perfect EP could be. I haven't made that, but something else has occurred to my satisfaction," Daedelus humbly concedes. A six-track bundle of goodness, Daedelus describes Throw A Fit as "a series of seemingly disparate songs that share a common home; a journey to the center of something largely stop-motion." How does Throw A Fit differ from his previous releases? "I like to think of the medium, and I wanted this EP to fit in your mono computer speaker or ridiculous dub sound system. Each song should have its own feeling, taken in singles, or together something else slightly grander," explains Daedelus.
The first track on Throw A Fit, "Admit Defeat" is Alfred's take on "electro and hip-hop egotism." Track two is entitled "It's Madness," where you hear Daedelus "missing someone terribly." The third tune "Remix of Nothing" is about "nothing really important. Just bounce, rock and skate (of course remixes as well)." The fourth track, "Unadventurer" features Alpha Pup label mate Subtitle, who waxes poetic about not liking people, places or fun. The next track "Humdrum Headspin" is "on mood swings and such things." The closing opus, "A Complicated Geometry," is abstractly described by Daedelus as "that moment when (and please don't cast me too much the enthusiast even though I have known the inside of my eyelids perhaps too well at times in my life) dreams become troublesome labyrinths and you just can't wake up until it's through. Something has happened, but it was all just a dream and doesn't feel that petty."
In an unusual twist, Daedelus showcases his vocal abilities on several Throw A Fit tracks ("It's Madness" and "Remix of Nothing"). In addition, his positive experience working with Subtitle still resonates months later. "Dude is inspiring in the studio," says Daedelus. "He had some thoughts about a foggy London street, and extra chopping, spitting, and unadventuring. But then again, I'm not sure who said what. It just started and I was along for the ride."
Meanwhile, Daedelus continues to tour the world - a Fall 2006 Throw A Fit tour is being planned - and produce inspired music. A new album entitled Love To Make Music To is in the works, as well as a complete Welsh concept record that will be recorded all in Welsh with only Welsh artists. A musical outfit called The Long Lost (with his wife Laura Darlington) will release its debut album next year. The sky is the limit for this member of the musical illuminati.
