Neon Neon is the artist name for the combined musical powers of Los Angeles based producer Boom Bip and Super Furry Animals main man and solo star Gruff Rhys. The talented collaborators' forthcoming single, Raquel, is a precision engineered, turbo-charged slice of power-pop - and ode to US film and TV star Raquel Welch. The wider context for Raquel's subject matter can be found within the song's parent record - the startlingly original forthcoming Neon Neon concept album, Stainless Style, due to roll off the production line early next year.
Â
The whole Stainless Style record is inspired by the incredible life of the world's first playboy engineer, John DeLorean. The ballsy businessman dealt in high stakes, borrowing enormous sums of money, including '£85 million from the British Government, in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of building an automotive empire. His crowning glory, the iconic DMC-12, better known as simply 'The DeLorean', was fittingly immortalized as Marty and Doc's time machine in legendary 80s movie Back To The Future.
Â
With his jet setting lifestyle, fast cars and sharp flared suits, the flamboyant DeLorean had no shortage of female admirers and was connected to a string of glamorous lovers including the leading lady of Neon Neon's Raquel single. "The most desired woman of the 70s" according to Playboy Magazine, Raquel Welch became an international sex symbol when she emerged from the sea clad in an animal skin bikini as the sexiest prehistoric woman in the film One Million Years BC.
Â
Boom Bip's euphoric, lush and pin-sharp dancefloor-pop leads us into the heady world of fast cars, fast living, shagpile carpets and the bitter taste of martini as Gruff Rhys's brilliantly maverick songwriting reimagines - through the eyes of DeLorean himself - the heady romance between the smitten fast-living businessman and silver screen siren.
Â
Also lining up on the grid for the Raquel single is additional song, Trick For Treat, featuring saucy vocals by Sean Tillman and raps from Naeem of Spank Rock. As well as the original version - which first appeared earlier this year on a limited run of quickly sold out 12" prototype picture discs - the Raquel single package also includes all-new growling, sonically-supercharged Trick For Treat remix by London electro/soul/pop music mechanics Hot Chip. Raquel will be released 26th November, and the fully waxed, polished and race prepared Stainless Style hits showrooms in early 2008.
