Justin Stein had been involved in a number of musical endeavors by the
time he started putting together a series of bedroom recordings as
Elk. Leading up to his first Elk recordings in the summer of 2008,
Justin had worked in a similarly noisy and melodic band named Morgan
Fair in Northville, MI before relocating to Brooklyn in the fall of
2008. Elk's first live show was performed as a 3 piece with Justin
Stein(vocals, guitar, samples), Katrina Lewinski(vocals), and Leah
Roth(vocals, percussion). This line up leaned towards electronic
music and sixties pop.
Justin was initially inspired by Ellie Greenwoods girl group songs and
the looping repetiveness of drone and Steve Reich. He has since
incorporated influences of electronic music, specifically Detroit
Techno and chicago House. There are also elements of Noise ,
Bubblegum Pop, Synth Pop, Stax Records Soul, and Spector inspired
orchestral Pop. The band is essentially justin Stein with a revolving
door of local musicians helping in recording and live performances.
Almost all of 2009 was spent recording Elks debut EP Honey Range. It
was finally finished in Septemper 2009 and is set to be released
digitally in December as well as on 12' Vinyl.
