Though based in Paris, Herman Dune's musical family tree extends to Brooklyn, Sweden, Berlin and the UK. With deep roots in the anti-folk scene of New York City and the longtime support of BBC Radio's (late, great) John Peel, the charming and hirsute duo of David-Ivar Herman Dune on vocals and guitar (bearded) and Neman Herman Dune on drums and percussion (mustachioed), have developed a devoted underground following since the legendary band formed nearly a decade ago.
'1-2-3/Apple Tree,' out 6/24 (Everloving), is another bite-size dose of their catchy, off-kilter pop. Produced by Richard Formby (Spacemen 3/Spectrum, Mogwai) in Brynn Derwenn North Wales, the songs '1-2-3/Apple Tree' 'Pure Hearts' and 'Your Name My Game' originally appeared on their 2007 European album 'Giant.'
The infectious video for the EP's title track, by director Toben Seymour (Willowz, Bloc Party), includes puppetized versions of the Dune's on the run from rabid fans. Think Richard Lester's "A Hard Day's Night" meets Sesame Street. Seymour and the puppet version of David-Ivar even made a guest appearance with Herman Dune at SXSW this year, joining the band on-stage at their Friday night showcase.
Coinciding with the June release of '1-2-3/Apple Tree,' Herman Dune will return to the U.S. to play a handful East Coast shows. The mini-tour commences Sunday June 22 at Central Park's Summerstage with Yael Naim (whose tune "New Soul" appears in a MacBook Air commercial) and Everloving label mate Piers Faccini. Herman Dune also headline Maxwell's, Union Pool and The Iron Horse with longtime pal Jeffrey Lewis supporting.
Like their previous Everloving EP "I Wish That I Could See You Soon," the artwork for "1-2-3/Apple Tree" was drawn by David-Ivar Herman Dune and arrives in a limited edition sleeve, hand-screened at Everloving HQ.
This Autumn, Everloving will release a brand new full-length Herman Dune LP.
